Supervisee in Clinical Social Work
Welcome! My name is Matthew Lunsford and I am a supervisee in clinical social work and yoga therapist. I have been in private practice since September 2021 and hold an MS in psychology with a concentration in developmental neurobiology, an EdM in special education, and an MSW in clinical/medical social work. I am currently working towards my Doctor of Social Work (DSW) in clinical social work. My patients tell me that a very warm and kind therapist. I use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yoga therapy, and psychodynamic therapy to meet you where you are in your recovery journey. I firmly believe that each style of therapy isn’t “one size fits all.” I use CBT and yoga therapy to challenge unhelpful thoughts and give you the tools to better live “in the moment.” Psychodynamic therapy may be used to help you understand how past events are influencing your present.
My approach to therapy is client-centered. After our “get to know you” call, I will start with a diagnostic assessment. This will be your opportunity to go into depth about what is bringing you to see me and allow me to begin the treatment planning process. After this initial appointment, each session will be primarily led by you. My role in the therapy process is to act as a guide, so I make the therapy room a safe space to bring whatever you feel that you need for the day. My approach to group therapy is similar. While I still act as a guide, group is your chance to bounce ideas off of others going through a similar journey. I will offer professional reflection and insight as needed in individual, couples, and group modalities.
