Joe Ramsay - Mental Health & Neurodiversity Consultant
About My Work in Mental Health & Neurodiversity
I hold a degree in Mental Health Nursing and am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). I maintain enhanced DBS clearance and public liability insurance.
My career spans over a decade, including seven years working with crisis teams, A&E, and the Intensive Home Treatment Team, plus two years supporting patients in primary care. For the past year, I’ve worked freelance, offering consultancy and specialist input at both individual and organisational levels, with a particular focus on mental health and neurodiversity.
Alongside clinical practice, I run support groups and maintain a private community practice, mentoring university students across Leeds, York, and Bradford. My caseload includes regular clients and students, and I deliver workshops for NHS teams, charities, and community organisations.
Highlights from my journey:
– Delivered talks at events like Unity Day in Leeds
– Ran workshops in Kent supporting a new initiative including Sheppey Pulse Network
– Invited NHS autism and learning disabilities events in Bradford and Keighley (upcoming)
I’ve gained hands-on experience with an exceptionally wide range of situations and individuals—often working for free in the community to deepen my understanding of neurodiversity and mental health. I’ve supported people with ADHD, autism, selective mutism, complex trauma, substance use, and challenging behaviours, including reintegration into mainstream and SEN school systems, violence reduction, and peer mentoring for university students. People naturally gravitate to my support groups and practice because of my experience and empathetic approach.
Through casework, mentoring, workshops, organisational consultation, online clinics, and emergency multidisciplinary meetings, I’ve developed a unique blend of clinical knowledge and lived insight that few possess.
At the organisational level, my consultancy extends to multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, mortality and morbidity reviews, complex case discussions—supporting internal staff teams and external networks (including emergency MDT meetings with social care, children’s services, and CAMHS). I’ve developed national resources adopted by agencies like Turning Point, Leeds City Council, the Department for Work and Pensions, and CAMHS.
A vital aspect of my practice is lived experience—I have ADHD myself and know firsthand the challenges of navigating mental health and neurodevelopmental differences, even as a nurse. This journey shapes my approach, ensuring practical, evidence-based guidance rooted in both clinical expertise and real-world experience. My full-time self-employment has deepened my understanding, constantly learning and adapting as I work with a wide variety of individuals and organisations.
There are very few consultants nationally with this breadth and depth of experience across complex mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions. If you want more details about professional registration, qualifications, or my scope of services, please get in touch.
