Cameron Em Mais, LPCC-CO (They/Them)
“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation” (bell hooks)
My approach to working with clients is rooted in three foundational beliefs: (1) Relationships and community are essential to healing and mental health. (2) Therapy is political because the personal is political; we are shaped by the world around us, and the work we do in sessions has to address not only you as an individual but also the larger systems that impact your ability to heal and thrive. (3) The complex ways people show up and engage with the world should be valued and honored. When these things are done well, I believe therapy has the potential to move us toward community, connection, and collective liberation.
As a white, queer/trans, disabled, neurodivergent person, I prioritize offering affirming care that is designed to support and address the needs of underserved and/or marginalized clients and communities. I aim to create a relaxed and safe space for collaboration, celebration, and growth, where autonomy and self-direction are not only welcomed by encouraged. Much of my work with clients involves providing this dedicated safe space for clients to: (1) explore and change internalized oppression, beliefs, and coping tools that no longer serve them; (2) unpack experiences that have shaped them; (3) develop the tools and skills to thrive.
I’m currently completing my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at UCCS. My professional background is in specialty case management, more specifically supporting disabled people in their transitioning from institutions back to their communities as a part of efforts towards deinstitutionalization and decarceration; Additionally, I have experience in service coordination for uninsured/underinsured individuals seeking substance use disorder treatment.
I don’t believe there’s ever a “perfect time” to start therapy – I’m here and ready to co-create an experience that meets you where you are right now, whatever your comfort level, goals, and needs may be. If you’re interested in working together, please schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit!
