Imago Relationship Therapist / Couples Counsellor / EMDR Therapist
I work with individuals and with couples where one or both individuals identify as neurodivergent. I also work with individuals, a parent and an adult child, siblings, and other platonic relationships.
Couples:
The issues that clients usually bring are the impacts of communication differences and mutual misunderstandings, i.e. trauma responses of shutting down, losing your words, or melting down can be viewed as rejection, the cold shoulder, or scary temper tantrums, by a partner. It’s difficult to feel safe in situations like this and difficult to maintain a desire for each other and hope for the future.
I am trained in an approach known as Imago Relationship Therapy, which emphasizes safe communication.
The approach:
Is structured and easily learnt for use between sessions.
Provides space to think, hear, and process what you hear.
Provides the powerful experience of being heard, and understood or validated your your partner. The feeling that someone ‘gets you’ can be rare for many of us who identify as neurodivergent, especially if we were missed/misidentified growing up.
Involves you and your partner consciously creating a joint plan for your life together.
Enables you to move beyond your comfort zones which possibly involved masking, to a more authentic intimacy and a deeper love.
If this resonates with you, get in touch, and let’s discuss your needs, wants, and desires for your relationship.
Individuals:
My work with individuals often involves emotional wounds suffered in relationships, from chidhood, to the present. I am trained in Transactional Analysis, and EMDR, and I draw on the approach that best supports the needs of my client. If you are particularly interested in EMDR, we will spend time building a space that feels safe and supportive for you, before considering processing; this could take a few sessions, or a few months, we will always move at your pace.
Example of issues that people have worked on with me:
Childhood trauma
Anger
Feeling easily triggered
The impact of bullying
Poor self image
Internalised ableism
Fear
Feeling stuck
