D. Joel Marquart, ADHD & Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapist
I work primarily with neurodivergent adults, including ADHDers, who are trying to better understand themselves and build lives that work with their brains rather than constantly fighting against them.
Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, burned out, or frustrated by the gap between what they know they are capable of and what they are able to consistently do. We might work together on executive functioning challenges such as task initiation, motivation, organization, time management, procrastination, or maintaining routines. We may also explore anxiety, perfectionism, shame, emotional overwhelm, masking, relationships, work stress, identity, or the impact of years spent trying to meet expectations that weren’t designed with your needs in mind.
My approach is neurodiversity-affirming, collaborative, and practical. I don’t see ADHD or other forms of neurodivergence as something that needs to be fixed. Instead, I’m interested in understanding how your particular brain works, identifying barriers and support needs, building strategies that are realistic for you, and helping you develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
Sessions are conversational and individualized. Some weeks we may focus on concrete strategies for something you’re struggling with right now; other weeks we may slow down and explore patterns, relationships, emotions, identity, or experiences from your past. I draw from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and strengths-based approaches rather than expecting every client to fit into one particular model of therapy.
I also work with clients navigating religious trauma, faith transitions and deconstruction, men’s emotional expression, life transitions, boundaries, and relationship difficulties. I welcome LGBTQ+ clients and aim to provide therapy where clients don’t need to mask or perform a particular version of themselves in order to be understood.
Above all, I want therapy to be a place where curiosity replaces judgment. You don’t need to become more “normal” or more productive to make therapy worthwhile. We can instead figure out what matters to you, what gets in the way, what kinds of support actually help, and how to build a life that feels more sustainable and authentically yours.
I provide telehealth for adults in Tennessee, Illinois and Florida.
