I’m Ben Adams, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. I’m licensed in Washington State (LH61137283) and specialize in trauma, dissociation, and third-culture experiences.

My Background
My journey has taken me across countries, disciplines, and careers. I spent 12 years growing up as an expat in Taiwan, experiencing firsthand the challenges and identity shifts that come with being a third-culture kid. This personal background gives me unique insight into the expat experience, cultural transitions, and identity development.

Academically, I earned a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University. My early career took me through diverse roles:

Ghana (Peace Corps) – I taught Biology and Physics at the high school level for two years.

Cambridge, MA – I worked as a Research Scientist for five years in a biotech startup.

Pastoral Work – I also volunteered as an Associate Pastor, exploring the intersections of psychology, spirituality, and personal transformation.

My Path to Counseling
While I was volunteering as an associate pastor I had the honor of meeting with individuals who began to share their struggles with me. I became fascinated with the inner world of people, and the complexities of how these individuals were navigating their lives, and how different they all were. I was not well equipped to help in my volunteer position, but I knew it was what I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life doing. This led me to pursue a Master’s in Counseling Psychology at the Seattle school of Theology and Psychology. I also interned at the Recovery Café in Seattle, working closely with individuals recovering from addiction, trauma, and mental health challenges.

After graduation, I became a Practicum Facilitator at the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, mentoring future therapists in self-awareness and therapeutic practice.

My Work Today
Now, I specialize in trauma therapy, dissociation, and identity development, with a strong focus on third-culture experiences, expat transitions, and complex trauma. My approach is integrative and neurodiversity-affirming, blending psychological depth, neuroscience, and philosophical inquiry to help clients navigate their inner worlds.

Currently, I live in Lilongwe, Malawi (Central African Time, UTC+02:00), where I offer online therapy to clients worldwide. I work with expats, third-culture kids, and trauma survivors, helping them find clarity, healing, and a renewed sense of self.
